Alabama Hills


Around California-Alabama Hills, Inyo County, California elevation 4,534 feet. West of US 395 just south of Manzanar. Alabama Hills named after the CSS Alabama a Confederate States Navy "sloop of war" build in 1862 at "Birkenhead on the River Mersey opposite Liverpool, England." Had a "two-year career, during which she never docked at a Southern port" and "was sunk in June 1864 by USS Kearsarge at the Battle of Cherbourg outside the port of Cherbourg, France."
