Work from home (WFM) during the pandemic yielded incredible flexibility for many workers. Without the commute, WFH employees found themselves with more time and flexibility. While working from home they could weave in some child-care, pet-care, fitness, meal preparation, housekeeping and make more time for their significant others.

Having experienced such freedom workers may be reevaluating work-life balance and their career goals. Some recent workplace survey results now suggest that 25-40% of workers may be quitting their current jobs for reenvisioned roles. “The Great Resignation" as it is called may be given a boost by still flexible unemployment benefits.

A subset of workers pondering change want fewer hours of work or want the flexibility that comes with WFH. Other workers liked the office before the pandemic but now sense a change of culture that no longer feels like a good fit. These workers may reject the hybrid work model where some employees WFH while others work in office either on a rotating or permanent basis. Other employees don’t want to permanently WFM in cases where firms have switched to that model.

Human resource leaders point out “The Big Churn…could be good all around” as workers may find new roles that are a better fit for them now. In the end, such a shift could lead to more job stability a trend that could benefit employee and employer alike. Currently, there are 9.3 million open jobs.
