The parent company of ABJ, “The Business Journals” polled 2,404 people from August 9-11 “about returning to the office.” On the key question, “the survey found that 65% of companies responded ‘yes’ when asked, if they remain in a hybrid situation, whether they will allow employees to work from anywhere. The survey cited, as an example, working in a different city.” Highest was 67% for small businesses, those with fewer than 100 employees and lowest 58% in large companies, those with more than 1,000 employees.

On other questions, only 22% would allow workers to choose their own hours, 17% would allow employees to select their preferred in-office days of week and 15% responded they will not allow flexibility. In aggregate 45% of businesses hoped their employees would follow their recommendations on workspace options but commented that they would evaluate each situation on an employee by employee basis if need be.

Reportedly the rise of the COVID Delta variant has put some decision-making regarding return to work on hold. Over half of the surveyed companies said Delta has caused them to push back return to office.

If less office-space is required after COVID businesses may renegotiate terms accordingly.
