Loma Prieta meaning dark hill is the peak in the Santa Cruz mountains 3,790 ft.
For locals. it is often the only part of the range that's snow-capped each winter.
For the rest of the world, it was the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake happening just before the start of Baseball World Series Game three between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics (Visiting Team).
The temblor was magnitude 6.9 at 5:04 local time injured 3,727 and caused 63 deaths.
The quake caused liquifaction in the in the Marina District of San Francisco and created many of the casualties as it collapsed the double-deck of Nimitz freeway (Oakland) and part of the Oakland Bay Bridge.
There was heavy damage in Santa Cruz County especially in the mountain area but also in Monterey County.
